How UCP GPA and CGPA are calculated

The University of Central Punjab grades relatively. Its regulations put it plainly: the university "in general, follows the relative grading scheme", and the points table is described as what that scheme means on an absolute scale. Your letter depends on where you land in your own section, not on a fixed percentage. That is why this calculator starts from the grade you were actually given, instead of trying to convert marks for you.

The UCP scale has one feature that catches people out. There are no D grades. It runs from A (4.00) down to C- (1.67), and then straight to F (0.00). C- is the lowest passing grade. The cushion that a D gives students at most other universities does not exist here, so a course that would scrape a pass elsewhere is a fail at UCP.

Add one semester at a time, one row per course. You get each semester's SGPA together with the running CGPA up to that semester, and a transcript-style PDF export when you want the whole record in one place.

The Formula

SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semesters

An F is worth 0.00 grade points but its credit hours stay in the denominator, so it pulls the average down from both sides. Results are rounded to two decimal places.

Worked Examples

Example 1: one semester's SGPA

A 15-credit-hour semester using UCP grade points.

Object Oriented Programming, 4 CH, A (4.00)4 × 4.00 = 16.00
Linear Algebra, 3 CH, A- (3.67)3 × 3.67 = 11.01
Financial Accounting, 3 CH, B+ (3.33)3 × 3.33 = 9.99
Communication Skills, 3 CH, B (3.00)3 × 3.00 = 9.00
Islamic Studies, 2 CH, C+ (2.33)2 × 2.33 = 4.66
Total grade points16.00 + 11.01 + 9.99 + 9.00 + 4.66 = 50.66
Total credit hours4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 15
ResultSGPA = 50.66 ÷ 15 = 3.38

Example 2: what one F costs you

The 3.38 semester above, followed by 15 credit hours in which a 3-credit course is failed and the rest average 3.20.

Semester 1 points3.38 × 15 = 50.66
Semester 2, 12 CH passed at 3.203.20 × 12 = 38.40
Semester 2, failed 3 CH course3 × 0.00 = 0.00
Cumulative points50.66 + 38.40 + 0.00 = 89.06
Cumulative credit hours15 + 15 = 30
ResultCGPA = 89.06 ÷ 30 = 2.97. The F alone costs about 0.32 of CGPA

UCP letter grades and their grade points. There is no marks column on purpose. Under relative grading the percentage behind a letter shifts with each section, so a fixed marks-to-grade table would be wrong more often than right. Note where the scale ends. C- is the lowest passing grade at UCP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no D grade at UCP?

Because the UCP regulations do not define one. The letter grades run A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C- and then F. The scale stops at C- (1.67), with no D+ or D beneath it. Most Pakistani universities let a D (1.00) count as a bare pass. At UCP that band is a fail, so the passing floor is higher than students transferring in expect.

Why can't I enter marks instead of a letter grade?

UCP grades relatively, so there is no fixed percentage that maps to a letter. Your grade depends on how your section performed, so the same 74% can come back as a B in one course and a B- in another. A calculator that converts UCP marks to grades is guessing. This one uses the letter your transcript shows.

What is an FA grade and how does it affect my CGPA?

FA means fail on attendance. It is awarded when you miss the mandatory 75% attendance requirement, and the UCP regulations say it affects your GPA exactly like an F. Enter it as an F in the calculator, so it scores zero grade points and its credit hours still count.

My UCP result sheet shows percentages with a D grade. Why doesn't this match?

You are probably looking at a UCP Centre for Professional Studies (CPS) programme. CPS publishes its own older absolute table, in force since Spring 2012, which does include D+ and D with fixed percentage bands. This calculator follows the main University Regulations for undergraduate degree programmes. If your transcript shows a D, use the CPS scheme rather than this page.

How is a course's final mark made up at UCP?

The regulations set the distribution as 20–30% midterm, 30–40% assignments, quizzes and projects, and 40–50% final examination. The exact split within those ranges is the instructor's, which is worth knowing when you are working out how much a final exam can still move your grade.

Do W and I courses count towards my CGPA?

No. The UCP regulations leave I for incomplete and W for withdrawn out of the GPA and CGPA entirely. They carry no grade points and no credit hours. Leave those rows out of the calculator. The grade dropdown only offers real letter grades for this reason.

If I repeat a course, which grade counts?

The better one. UCP shows both the original and the revised grade on the transcript, but only the better grade is counted towards the CGPA. When you recalculate here, enter only the attempt that counts.
